Neil McQueen - Keyboards
Neil's Bio
Born:Yes. Once.
Instrument: Keyboards (Piano, Hammond organ, Electric Pianos, Synthesizers, Melodion, and a lot of non-keyboard sounds coming out of keyboards), backing vocals. Also double on drums, bass, and guitar (but not around these guys...).
Equipment: Nord Stage 73, Yamaha S90-ES, Yamaha MotifES, Steinway S grand with midi recording abilities, Yamaha KX-88, Hammond 44 electric melodion through effects pedal board (very unique new sound), giggable PowerMac G4 with MainStage running Logic instruments, Native Instruments B4, Scarbee Electric Pianos, Ivory, Moog, Strings and loads of other sounds, Kurzweil rack, Roland JV rack, M-Audio Axiom, 1983 Fender telecaster, Yamaha acoustic/electric guitars, Fender P-bass, several mics, electronic and acoustic drums, most of the latter in my two studios. Have had Hammond B-3s, C-3s, Porta-Bs, Fender Rhodes electric pianos, Leslies (most recently a 122 bulldog w/ Speakeasy pre), but too much "oh the back", especially given what Nord Stage keyboards can pull off these days. A really fun and expressive Hammond 44 electric melodion. No Keytars, ever.
Influences: Yes, King Crimson, Bach, Bud Powell, Porcupine Tree, Keith Jarrett, Steely Dan, Dregs, John Novello/Niacin, Spock's Beard, Brad Mehldau, Oscar Peterson, Muse, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Mars Volta, Elvis Costello, Eric Satie, Rare Earth, Gentle Giant, Handel, John Coltrane, Vince Guaraldi, Triumvirate, Spirit, Focus, Diana Krall, Crack the Sky, Counting Crows, Medeski Martin and Woods, Thelonius Monk, Albinoni, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Johnny Cash, Norah Jones, Mozart, Duke Ellington, Marian McPartland, Lennie Tristano.
Favorite Bands:Prymary, Porcupine Tree, Yes, Bud Powell, Brad Mehldau, Bach, Spock's Beard, Oscar Peterson, Muse, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Mars Volta, Elvis Costello, Eric Satie, Rare Earth, Gentle Giant, Handel, John Coltrane, Vince Guaraldi, Steely Dan, Dregs, Triumvirate, Spirit, Focus, Diana Krall, Crack the Sky, Counting Crows, Medeski Martin and Woods, John Novello/Niacin, Thelonius Monk, Albinoni, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Johnny Cash, Norah Jones, Mozart, Duke Ellington, Marian McPartland, Lennie Tristano.
Favorite Album:So tough. Probably Yes Close to the Edge, or Fragile, or Porcupine Tree Deadwing, or King Crimson Discipline, or Triumvirate, or Miles Davis Kind of Blue, or Keith Jarrett doing Handel Suites, or Keith Jarrett's Whisper Not masterpiece, or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, or Wakeman Six Wives, or Echolyn As the World.... But please, not on MP3, todays' MP3 world is listening to way too much over-compressed, dynamically dead music. But that's another story. Meantime, I need to get the vinyl back out.
Favorite Movies: Pulp Fiction, Pulp Fiction, and Pulp Fiction, in that order. And both old and new versions of Cape Fear. And the Thelonius Monk story "Straight no chaser". On the first two, I guess I like getting the inside matter scared out of me, and that only happens when something is offbeat and a bit sideways of expectation. The sideways comment also pertains to the Monk movie, but in that case it's about being yourself, and being different. Still don't know if he was crazy like a fox or just crazy. Doesn't matter I guess. Oh, and for never-get-tired-of-watching-it entertainment, the Oceans movies and the Bourne stuff.
Favorite TV Shows: Andy Griffith, Rachel Maddow, Simpsons, The Deadliest Catch, UFC bouts. Yea, that's an odd list. Not much TV time though. Certainly never the Laguna Beach reality series for sure, because I live there, and the whole town hates what it's done to us.
Hobby: Playing full-speed locrian riffs in 7/4...oh wait, that's 13/8. Surfing and Stand-Up Paddleboarding. Being a Mac Nut. Music equipment G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Dog training and teenager training -- so many similarities, but I have to pick up less after the dog ;-). Laughing at politicians.
